Half of the eggs in each treatment received an aromatase inhibitor, which successfully produced males in all treatments. Researchers must also measure the survival of that individual's offspring to sexual maturity. The incision was sutured with absorbable chromic cat gut, and the area dusted with antibiotic powder.

We assigned the type of sex-determination system to each species according to the Tree of Sex [ 20 ]. Our study also supports this feedback relationship in the evolution of sex-determination systems and sex ratios by showing that, compared to TSD species, GSD reptiles indeed exhibit consistently more balanced sex ratios not only at birth but also in the adult populations.
Allee effects, mating systems and the extinction risk in populations with two sexes. Genotypic sex determination enabled adaptive radiations of extinct marine reptiles. Reprints and Permissions. Researchers counted, collected, and incubated second generation eggs across all years, recording which females bore which eggs, and taking tissue samples from each offspring for paternity analyses.
First, researchers had to test the reproductive success of one sex at temperatures that naturally produce that sex in the wild, as well as at temperatures that produce the opposite sex. One possible explanation that TSD is common in amniotes is phylogenetic inertia — TSD is the ancestral condition in this clade and is simply maintained in extant lineages because it is currently adaptively neutral or nearly so.
Sexual phenotype is known for 73 hatchlings incubated at six temperatures, of which two temperatures produced hatchlings of both sexes Table 1. Temperature-dependent sex determination and contemporary climate change.

Warner and Shine's validation of the Charnov-Bull model emphasized that embryonic stages can influence the evolution of physiological mechanisms that control the reproductive success of adult organisms. Our study showed that the type of sex-determining mechanism is associated with key demographic attributes across reptiles with genetic versus temperature-dependent sex-determination systems.
